There's a sound a lot of us haven't heard in twenty years, and yet we'd all recognise it instantly. The screech and hiss of a modem dialling up. If you're under about thirty, you might only know it as a meme. If you're older, you probably remember exactly where you were sitting when you heard it, waiting, sometimes for a full minute, before you could get online.
That wait was the point. It told you something was happening. You could hear the machine working, feel the tower under your desk warm up, listen to the drive click and whirr as it searched for a file. Computing used to announce itself.
It doesn't anymore. Today the internet arrives instantly and silently, on a device that fits in a pocket and barely gets warm. Somewhere in that shift, from noisy to silent, from effortful to effortless, we lost something more than the sound. We lost our sense that any of it takes real infrastructure to run.
It's not anyone's fault, particularly. It's just what happens when convenience does its job too well.
Not long ago, information was physical. It sat in filing cabinets and ledgers, moved at the speed of the post and the phone call, and lived somewhere you could point to. Then came mainframes, then desktop computers, then the internet, and each step made sense on its own. A faster way to calculate. A simpler way to store. A quicker way to send. Nobody sat down and decided to make the world dependent on digital infrastructure. It happened gradually, one convenience at a time, until those conveniences became expectations, and the expectations became assumptions nobody thinks to question anymore.
That's the paradox worth sitting with. The more weightless and instant digital life feels, the more physical infrastructure it actually requires behind the scenes. Every search, message, video call and AI prompt still has to run on a machine somewhere. Those machines need land, power, cooling, connectivity and people to look after them.
It didn't disappear. It moved.
The whirring drives and dial-up tones relocated out of our homes and offices and into purpose-built facilities designed to do that work at far greater scale, and far more reliably, than anything that used to sit under a desk. That's what a data centre is: the noise, concentrated, professionalised, and made invisible to the person using the service at the other end.
In the UK, that role has grown enough that data centres are now recognised as critical national infrastructure, as essential to daily life as the roads, water and power grids most of us also never think about until something goes wrong. London is already one of Europe's major data centre markets, with newer hubs growing in places like Manchester and South Wales.
But invisibility comes at a cost. When people can no longer hear or see the infrastructure their lives depend on, it's easy to underestimate its importance, or to view its expansion with suspicion rather than understanding. Data centres are large, real investments with real local impact on energy, land and communities. That deserves scrutiny. It also deserves context.
Artificial intelligence is about to make this dynamic more urgent. AI workloads demand far more processing power and far greater resilience than the applications data centres were originally built for. The infrastructure behind our digital lives is going to keep growing, whether we're paying attention to it or not.
The task ahead isn't to make people feel guilty about their phones, or nostalgic for dial-up. It's to reconnect the convenience we've come to expect with an honest picture of what makes it possible, so that as this industry keeps building, it does so with the public's understanding, not just its usage.
The internet got quiet. That doesn't mean the work stopped. It just means it's someone else's job now to make sure it never has to make a sound.
