Policy statement
Ark designs, builds, and operates the UK’s most efficient data centres. We are committed to leading the industry in reducing the impact of our activities on the environment. In every aspect, our impact should be the absolute minimum. We recognise that our products and business operations have an influence on the energy consumed and shall endeavour to take practical steps to minimise any negative impact. This policy applies to all data centre campuses, employees and contractors working for or on behalf of Ark at all sites.
We will:
- Quantify our energy consumption (as kWh) and associated CO2e emissions, including indirect emissions, based on recognised international protocols. This will include indirect emissions from Grid electricity.
- Relate energy to measure(s) of activity. The chosen metric for this is “power usage effectiveness” (PUE) measured in accordance with BS EN 50600-4-2 Category 1.
- Establishing and reviewing energy objectives that are SMART and that reflect the needs and goals of the business. Those objectives and our performance against them are measured and evaluated as often as is necessary and in any event no less frequently than annually.
- Identify and progress energy-saving projects that can be implemented across our estate to help meet targets, and actively seek new opportunities, by:
– maintaining awareness of any relevant energy-efficient, renewable or low-carbon technologies;
– regularly conducting internal and external reviews and audits, then acting on the findings;
– ensuring the availability of information and the necessary resources to achieve objectives and targets. - Continue to develop our design and service offerings to ensure that energy-efficient products are used to maximum effect by:
– procuring energy-efficient products and services (within commercial reason) that impact energy performance;
– documenting in relevant Employer’s Brief’s, or other relevant documentation, Ark’s commitment to energy efficiency and compliance with ISO 50001;
– procuring green or renewable energy for our data centre campuses, unless the cost is prohibitive;
– providing relevant training to staff and contractors to raise awareness of energy impacts and issues;
– ensuring that everyone working for or on our behalf is aware that they have a responsibility to manage energy consumption positively and proactively. - Comply with all relevant energy laws, regulations, contractual or business requirements.
- Maintain our existing ISO 50001 (Energy Management) certification.
- Maintain our existing ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certification.
- Work with Tech UK and the Major Energy Users Council to obtain a CCA (or equivalent) for all of our applicable data centres.
- Work as a member of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP) to develop and implement the Self- Regulatory Initiatives (SRI) for measuring, monitoring and reporting operational improvements to recognised standards.
We are committed to continually look for ways to improve the efficiency, availability, sustainability and energy performance of our business. We will ensure continual improvement through research, lessons learned and listening to our customers and suppliers.
We, therefore, maintain an energy management system that reflects our business requirements, and we continually seek to improve the effectiveness of that system in order to reduce our energy impact on the environment.
Our energy management system is defined in documented policies, processes and procedures that provide clear standards and guidelines for all appropriate areas of our activities.
